It was very important to us when designing our home, to consider the needs of our family. We spend a lot of time together in the kitchen and rarely used the formal dining spaces in our previous homes. We opted to skip the formal dining space altogether in our new home and instead designed a space that flowed seamlessly from living to dining to kitchen. This has served us well for entertaining as it allows an easy flow of bodies in and out of the open spaces, free to meander about but not feeling separated from the rest of the group. It also allows for spaces for our kids to run -which is an added bonus (for them ;))
The coffee nook is situated off to the side but still is accessible to the rest of the spaces. We use this space for hot chocolate during the winter months and my kids are tickled that they have their very own hot chocolate station.
Our island is such a focal point in our kitchen which is why I opted for an accent wood color as opposed to keeping it monochromatic. We chose a rift sawn white oak wood – I wish I knew the stain color but if you’ve happened to see on IG, this is perhaps one of the only pieces of info I don’t have, as it was done by our custom cabinet carpenter who has opted not to share his stain mix with us. I know I hear the audible sighs from here, but if you have a good cabinet guy, he should be able to achieve this result by showing him our pics- that is how we got this stain color- Pinterest for the win!
